Like many, our family holiday celebrations center around the kitchen and cooking. Everyone has their signature dish/dishes. Of course, Nina and I prepare the dessert, biscuits and rolls, my mother her famous Mac and Cheese, my sister Curried Pumpkin Soup, my sister-in-law Pineapple Bake, Green Bean Casserole and Sauerkraut and the list goes on.
You know that old saying “you are what you eat”? Well it couldn’t be more true or more important to remember than at this time of year. Knowing that cooking is not everyone’s forte and that for many the Holiday Season also warrants the purchase of already prepared foods, this is just a reminder to “Eat for Real”!
What does that mean you ask? Real food is food that doesn’t contain artificial color, flavor, preservative and/or trans fat. Simply put, read ingredient labels…rule of thumb, if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it! Also, why not step out of your comfort zone…have fun, follow a recipe, make something from scratch, cook with your kids! If you must purchase something already prepared, purchase from a source that utilizes only all natural ingredients. You might pay a little bit extra, but is there anything more important than your health? I think not.
Happy Holidays, Great Eats and Safe Travels!
