Competition and my measure of success…

Berlin MD

Berlin MD

I fell in love with Berlin long before I decided to open a business here.  When BAKED opened 6 short years ago, Berlin MD was still considered a sleepy little historic town, but that has certainly changed and I, for one, am not at all surprised.

I knew then that it was just a matter of time before the hundred’s of thousand’s of visitors to the shore would discover what I already knew; that Berlin is a spectacular spot to spend days, nights, weekends, weeks, years!  I also knew that with that, more merchants would also be attracted to set up “shop” here and who could blame them.

It’s easy to think that having no competition would be a great thing, but that is neither reality or true, depending on how you look at it.  When I am able to view it through a clear lens, I know that competition can be a great thing.  Personally, it encourages me to be more innovative, creative and flexible.  Competition forces me to refocus, reevaluate and therefore improve not only our product, but also our customer service and customer reach.  Competition uproots complacency!

Competition, also encourages me to consider what my measure of success is…mine, not anyone else’s.  My measure of success hasn’t changed since we opened in 2010.  I run a small, all natural bakery in a town that I love, I employ two amazing women that I adore and who have become part of my family, I am surrounded by local art work from an art community whose talent continues to  blow me away, I connect with and serve the public, many of whom have become friends, I am able to give our littlest visitors free cookies and I have proven to my children that you should always follow your dream, work hard and everything is possible!
